As the founder of BFS Wealth Management, John has been a financial advisor for more than 35 years, and he has helped thousands of clients with financial planning and investment management during his extensive career. He focuses on asset management, helping clients work toward achieving the portfolio returns they need to reach their goals while remaining mindful of their risk profile. Throughout his client relationships, John is passionate about providing valuable advice and the education clients need to help them make constructive financial decisions that support their objectives.
What makes me knowledgeable
John received his undergraduate degree in finance from Lehigh University. He went on to earn the CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ certification and a master’s degree in financial planning from the College for Financial Planning. John’s career began in 1983 at Merrill Lynch, where he was hired as a Financial Advisor after completing the firm’s Donald Regan program for financial planning. Subsequently, John worked at Smith Barney and Morgan Stanley. Since joining Raymond James in 2005, John has been named to the firm’s prestigious Chairman’s Council every year since 2011. In 2015, 2016 and 2018, John was listed by the Financial Times as one of the FT 400 Top Financial Advisors in the country. Additionally, in 2018 and 2020, John was recognized as a Forbes Best-in-State Wealth Advisor. He is also a well-respected financial strategist whose research was published in the July 2010 and June 2016 issues of the Journal of Financial Planning. John has appeared numerous times on Bloomberg Television, CNBC, Fox Business News and other media outlets.
Getting to know me
John and his wife, Diane, have three adult children. He is an active member of his community and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Westfield, New Jersey, where he has served as treasurer. Along with Diane, John proudly supports and volunteers for the American Red Cross, in addition to supporting Children International, Community Food Bank and New York City Relief Bus. He is the owner of the Academy for Continuing Professional Education, which provides continuing education classes for accountants in central New Jersey.

Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards Inc. owns the certification marks CFP®, CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™, CFP® (with plaque design) and CFP® (with flame design) in the U.S., which it awards to individuals who successfully complete CFP Board’s initial and ongoing certification requirements.
The FT 400 was developed in collaboration with Ignites Research, a subsidiary of the FT that provides specialized content on asset management. To qualify for the list, advisers had to have 10 years of experience and at least $300 million in assets under management (AUM) and no more than 60% of the AUM with institutional clients. The FT reaches out to some of the largest brokerages in the U.S. and asks them to provide a list of advisors who meet the minimum criteria outlined above. These advisors are then invited to apply for the ranking. Only advisors who submit an online application can be considered for the ranking. In 2018, roughly 880 applications received; 45.5% (400) were selected for the final list. The 400 qualified advisers were then scored on six attributes: AUM, AUM growth rate, compliance record, years of experience, industry certifications, and online accessibility. AUM is the top factor, accounting for roughly 60-70 percent of the applicant’s score. Additionally, to provide a diversity of advisors, the FT placed a cap on the number of advisors from any one state that’s roughly correlated to the distribution of millionaires across the U.S. The ranking may not be representative of any one client’s experience, is not an endorsement, and is not indicative of an advisor’s future performance. The Forbes ranking of Best-In-State Wealth Advisors, developed by SHOOK Research, is based on an algorithm of qualitative criteria, mostly gained through telephone and in-person due diligence interviews, and quantitative data. Those advisors who are considered have a minimum of seven years of experience, and the algorithm weighs factors like revenue trends, AUM, compliance records, industry experience and those who encompass best practices in their practices and approach to working with clients. Portfolio performance is not a criteria due to varying client objectives and lack of audited data. In 2020, out of approximately 32,000 nominations from their firms, more than 4,000 received the award. In 2018, out of roughly 21,138 advisors nominated by their firms, 2,213 received the award.
